A deep upper low developed over the western U.S. and moved into the southern Rockies. At the same time a strong arctic cold front moved through West Texas and southeastern New Mexico bringing temperatures well below freezing. Precipitation began on the evening of the 4th that quickly transitioned to snow overnight that continued well into the afternoon of the 5th causing isolated snowfall amounts of almost a foot, with widespread amounts of 3 to 8 inches reported.
