Wider weather episode

A strong, nearly vertically stacked low moved into the western Great Lakes. Downstream of the low, a warm front moved northeast across the area during the morning, followed by a pre-frontal trough which entered Western NY early in the afternoon, then reached the western Finger Lakes by late afternoon. A narrow plume of modestly unstable air developed in the warm sector between the warm front and pre-frontal trough as temperatures briefly warmed into the upper 60s to lower 70s and surface dewpoints rose into the upper 50s to around 60. Very strong deep layer shear was also present. A broken line of convection developed over Lake Erie by midday and advanced east across Western NY with several different line segments and brief strong cores developing. The most impressive line segment moved right across the Buffalo Metro area during the start of the event with a measured 68 mph wind gust at the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. This line segment continued east-northeast to the western suburbs of Rochester before rapidly weakening. Other brief line segments and elevated cores developed south of Rochester with hail and gusty winds. All the storms rapidly weakened and dissipated as they moved towards central New York, where the boundary layer did not destabilize due to lingering low clouds.
