Event narrative
A 1998 Mercury Sable collided with a 1994 Infiniti on Route 9 near Stone Church Road in Rhinebeck, at approximately 20:30 EST Friday evening. One passenger of the Sable was killed, along with 4 other serious injuries, while two serious injuries occurred to the occupants of the Infiniti.
The Sable was heading south when the driver lost control and drifted into the northbound lane, and collided with the Infiniti which was heading north.
Slippery roadways from snow were believed to play a major role in the accident.
Wider weather episode
A low pressure system tracked east from the Great Lakes on Friday February 29th, into eastern Canada by Saturday morning on March 1st. A second low pressure area developed near New York City by Saturday morning. This combination of systems produced light to moderate snow across portions of the mid Hudson Valley, beginning Friday evening, and ending Saturday morning. Snowfall amounts generally ranged from 1 to 4 inches.
