Event narrative

The roof at Screven Elementary School was damaged by thunderstorm winds.

Wider weather episode

An upper level trough was across the eastern U.S. with a shortwave impulse rotating through the base of the trough across southeast Georgia in the afternoon which support strong to severe storms that developed along sea breeze and outflow boundary storms. The airmass was relatively dry for the Jacksonville area with a precipitable water value of 1.4 inches. Deeper moisture was confined to north central Florida and southward. Shear values included 0-6km shear around 25-30 knots with 500mb temperatures cooling than normal around -9C with dry air aloft. These ingredients favored damaging wind potential in storms.
