Wider weather episode

Tropical Storm Bertha rapidly developed near the southeast South Carolina coast and was officially classified as a Tropical Storm by the National Hurricane Center at 8:30 am EDT. Bertha made landfall at 9:30 am EDT about 20 miles east of Charleston between Dewees Island and Bulls Bay. After landfall, Bertha continued moving to the northwest across the Francis Marion National Forest through late morning, weakening to a Tropical Depression by the early afternoon. The primary impacts from Bertha included gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Across Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties, rainfall amounts ranged from 2 to 4 inches. This produced some minor flooding in downtown Charleston, causing a few roads and intersections to be closed for a short time. Winds peaked over the Atlantic coastal waters with a 51 knot wind gust measured at buoy 41004. Otherwise, wind gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range occurred mainly across Charleston County.
