Event narrative
The Department of Transportation reported significant flooding impacts from high water conditions on Williamson Swamp Creek in Davisboro. Roughtly a dozen homes on State Route 231 were surrounded or inundated with water on the southwest side of town. The USGS river gauge reported a crest of 14.66 feet, less than half a foot from Major Flood Stage. Radar estimates indicate that 8 to 10 inches of rain quickly fell over the area, resulting in the rapidly evolving flooding.
Wider weather episode
A weakening Tropical Storm Sally moved into Georgia on September 16th, spreading heavy rainfall amounts and producing damaging winds in north and central Georgia. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 8 inches occurred, with the axis of heaviest rainfall extending from near Columbus, to Macon, to Augusta. The highest winds were observed in the metro Atlanta area as Sally's convective bands moved through late on September 16th.
