Wider weather episode
A low pressure system moved across northern California on January 4 bringing mainly light precipitation to the central Sierra and adjacent foothills during the afternoon and evening hours. Several stations in the central Sierra picked up between a tenth and a quarter inch of liquid precipitation while a few locations that were impacted by heavier showers picked up close to a half inch of liquid precipitation. Between 4 and 8 inches of new snow fell above 7000 feet in the central Sierra north of Fresno County while precipitation amounts further south were much lower with only trace amounts to a few hundredths of an inch of precipitation being recorded. The cold frontal passage during the evening of January 4 did bring some locally strong wind gusts to the Tehachapi and Lake Isabella areas with a few low impact indicator sites briefly measuring gusts above 60 mph. The precipitation ended by late evening and winds decreased overnight.
