Event narrative
Fire official reported some sink holes and a couple of cars swept away in La Union. Radar estimated about 1 inch of rain in less than an hour.
Wider weather episode
Deep monsoon moisture was trapped over the Borderland with the region between two areas of high pressure, one to the west and one to the east. This setup a convergent zone across the area which helped to produce heavy rain in parts of southwest New Mexico.
