Event narrative

Winds gusted to between 70 and nearly 90 mph in eastern Plymouth County! The peak wind report was 88 mph in Duxbury (Weatherflow) at 840 AM EDT (740 AM EST) on the 27th. Other peak wind gusts included 83 mph in Scituate at 827 AM EDT (Weatherflow); 78 mph at the Hull Yacht Club (Weatherflow) at 528 AM EDT; 70 mph in Plymouth (trained spotter) at 535 AM EDT; 60 mph in Marshfield (AWOS) at 635 AM EDT. There was widespread damage to trees and power lines. Schools were closed for several days. According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, storm damage totals amounted to $2,658,115 in Plymouth County, the vast majority of which was from debris removal and emergency protective measures. Most of the outages were in eastern Plymouth County. A few of the specific reports received at NWS-Norton follow. In Plymouth at 953 PM EDT (853 PM EST) on the 26th, a large tree was down on Rt. 3A near Brook Rd; at 335 AM EDT on the 27th, multiple trees and wires were down on Federal Furnace Rd; and at 349 AM EDT in Plymouth, trees were down on houses on Sandwich St. and Cary Rd. and a tree was down on Arboretum Rd. In Duxbury at 1055 PM EDT, a tree was down on Congress St. near Holly Tree Ln. In Cohasset at 1124 PM EDT, power lines were down on North Main St. In Hull at 1209 AM EDT on the 27th, a tree was down on a house on Alsada Rd. In Norwell at 1232 AM EDT, a tree was split in half and down on Bowker St.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure nor'easter underwent bombogenesis as it developed east of Nantucket on the 26th. It then moved west toward Nantucket Sound, before heading eastward again back out to sea on the 27th. Winds gusted to 60-90+ mph. More than one-half million power outages were reported...495,000 in MA and 96,800 in RI. Schools were closed for multiple days, as it took a while to clean up the downed trees/wires and to restore power.
