Event narrative

Winds generally were gusting to gusted to between 60 and 75 mph in southern Plymouth County, but they were higher in eastern Plymouth County and in Dukes County. The peak wind report in southern Plymouth County was 68 mph at 423 AM EDT in Wareham at a CWOP station. The highest wind report in eastern Plymouth County was an 88 mph gust in Duxbury (Weatherflow) at 840 AM EDT (740 AM EST) on the 27th. There was widespread damage to trees and power lines. According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, storm damage totals amounted to $2,658,115 in all of Plymouth County, the vast majority of which was from debris removal and emergency protective measures. Most of the outages were in eastern Plymouth County. A few of the specific reports received at NWS-Norton follow. In Marion at 931 PM EDT (831 PM EST), a large tree and wires were down on Point Rd. Also in Marion at 1103 PM EDT, a large tree was down on Rt. 6 near the Mattapoisett line; at 256 AM EDT a large tree was down, blocking all 4 lanes of Rt. 6; and at 359 AM EDT, a tree was down on a house on Hiller St. In Mattapoisett at 348 AM EDT, two trees and power lines were down on cars on Mechanic St.; trees were down on Mattapoisett Neck Rd. and North St.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure nor'easter underwent bombogenesis as it developed east of Nantucket on the 26th. It then moved west toward Nantucket Sound, before heading eastward again back out to sea on the 27th. Winds gusted to 60-90+ mph. More than one-half million power outages were reported...495,000 in MA and 96,800 in RI. Schools were closed for multiple days, as it took a while to clean up the downed trees/wires and to restore power.
