Event narrative

The severe (D2) drought conditions across northern New Hampshire were reduced to a 0.5% of the area across portions of eastern Coos County. Between the beginning and end of September, the cumulative area in drought (D0-D2) was reduced from 30% to 21%. Monthly rainfall was at or above normal for the entire state, highest in the White Mountains region. Rainfall deficits for the year continued for the headwaters of the Connecticut and Androscoggin Rivers, with reports of 6 to 12 inches below normal since January 1. Impacts were limited to dried vegetation and reduced reservoir pool levels.

Wider weather episode

Severe drought conditions continued through September across portions of northern New Hampshire. Drought conditions developed in May 2021, with severe drought developing in late June. September brought above normal rainfall for all but northern New Hampshire where moderate and severe drought conditions continued. The U.S. drought monitor indicated a slight reduction in drought designations with a reduction during the month of 9% for D0-D2.
