Event narrative
The status of the drought remained unchanged through the month of January. The extreme (D3) drought continued over the northern portion of the zone with severe (D2) conditions elsewhere except for the far southeast corner where the moderate (D1) drought continued through the end of the month.
Wider weather episode
A few systems moved through western Colorado in January. As a result, drought conditions slightly improved, mainly in the higher elevations of northwest and west-central Colorado. Elsewhere, continued dry conditions resulted in no improvement in the drought.
