Event narrative
Broadcast media reported that 3 swimmers were transported to the hospital after becoming caught in a rip current near the 800 block of South Seabreeze Boulevard/A1A on Fort Lauderdale Beach at around 6:20 PM. One swimmer, a 21-year-old male, went into cardiac arrest at the hospital and passed away 4 days later, while the other two were released from the hospital the same day.
Lifeguards had just left their stations for the day about 30 minutes prior to the incident.
Wider weather episode
Strengthening easterly flow contributed to building seas, northeasterly swell, and rough surf across the Atlantic waters. This led to hazardous marine and beach conditions to the South Florida Atlantic coast beaches.
