The Longest Tornado Tracks on Record

A tornado that crosses several counties shows up in NOAA's database as several rows — one per county. The list below reconstructs the underlying tornado by chaining county segments that share an episode, a damage rating, and an end-to-begin point in space, then summing the path lengths. The longest single track that appears here is 132 miles (Hackleburg–Phil Campbell, 2011). The longest tornado track ever documented in the United States — the 1925 Tri-State Tornado at roughly 219 miles across Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana — predates this dataset.

How a long-track tornado lives in the data

NOAA's Storm Events Database is structured around county events. When a tornado crosses a county line, the surveying NWS office writes a new row for the new county, with a fresh path length measured from where the tornado entered the county to where it exited or dissipated. The 2011 Tuscaloosa–Birmingham EF4, for example, is recorded as one segment in Tuscaloosa County (41.79 miles), one in Jefferson County (32.53 miles), and continues from there. Adding the segments — and verifying that the end point of one matches the begin point of the next — recovers the actual track.

For modern tornadoes (post-2007), each event has an episode identifier that ties a single storm system together, and lat/long coordinates are reliable. The chaining is straightforward. For pre-2007 tornadoes, episode identifiers are absent and most cross-county tracks are not reconstructable from this data alone; the legacy entries in the list below are individual county records that crossed the length threshold on their own.

Long is not the same as deadly

The Hackleburg–Phil Campbell tornado of April 27, 2011 holds the longest reconstructed track in this list at 132 miles. It killed 72 people. The 2011 Joplin EF5 traveled 8.8 miles. It killed 161. Path length describes how far the tornado walked; lethality depends on what the path crossed. The 1925 Tri-State Tornado holds both records — 219 miles, 695 deaths — because it walked at sixty miles per hour through three populated states for three and a half hours, intensity barely dropping along the way.

Most of the longest tracks below are F2, F3, EF2, or EF3 rather than F5 or EF5. Violent tornadoes tend to be brief: the conditions that support EF5 damage are punishing on the storm itself, and the tornado often weakens or lifts within minutes of producing its peak. A long-track tornado is more often an EF3 that the parent supercell sustained for an hour over open country than a violent vortex that walked a hundred miles.

100 miles or longer: 12 tornadoes

Tracks at or above one hundred miles are the longest in the modern record. The 2011 Hackleburg–Phil Campbell EF5 walked 132 miles across northern Alabama into Tennessee in three hours, killing 72 people across six counties. The December 2021 quad-state Mayfield–Dawson Springs EF4 chains to 161 miles across Tennessee and Kentucky here, the longest single reconstruction in the dataset (NWS later examined the path and resolved it into multiple distinct tornadoes — what shows below is the unsplit ground track). The April 27, 2011 Super Outbreak contributed several of the longest tracks ever recorded; February 5, 2008 Super Tuesday and January 12, 2023 Georgia put others into this band.

60 to 100 miles: 59 tornadoes

This band holds most of the famous long-track tornadoes of the violent-supercell record: the 2011 Tuscaloosa–Birmingham EF4 (74 miles, 64 deaths), the 2011 Smithville EF5 across Mississippi and Alabama, the 2008 Super Tuesday tornadoes through Tennessee and Kentucky, the 2013 Washington, Illinois EF4. A tornado on the ground for an hour at a typical translation speed of forty to fifty miles per hour ends up here.

30 to 60 miles: 387 tornadoes

Most violent tornadoes — F4, F5, EF4, EF5 — fall in this range. The 1999 Bridge Creek–Moore F5 was 38 miles; the 2013 Moore EF5 was 17 miles; the 2007 Greensburg EF5 was 22 miles. Track length and intensity are uncorrelated: many short tracks rated F5/EF5, many long tracks rated F2 or F3 because the tornado weakened as it moved, even when the path is uninterrupted on the map.

Notes on the data

Modern entries (2007 and later) reconstruct the full track by chaining county segments within a shared episode_id and damage rating where the end coordinate of one segment matches the begin coordinate of the next within roughly four miles. Total path length sums the per-segment lengths; deaths and injuries sum across the chain; peak width is the maximum across segments. The /event/ link points to the segment with the most fatalities, since that row's NWS narrative typically carries the fullest account of the tornado.

Pre-2007 entries are individual county-row records that crossed the length threshold on their own; episode identifiers were not assigned in the original tabulations, and lat/long coordinates are absent or unreliable for many years. Cross-county legacy tornadoes are likely under-reconstructed here. The pre-2007 record is filtered to F2 and stronger entries with a recorded width of at least 100 yards, to avoid surfacing data-entry errors that show up as F0 or F1 tornadoes with hundred-mile paths and ten-yard widths.

The 1925 Tri-State Tornado, the 1917 Mattoon–Charleston tornado (293 miles, by the most generous reconstruction), and other pre-1950 long tracks predate this dataset entirely. Detailed surveys of those events live in the historical literature; this list begins in 1950, when NOAA's central tabulation begins.
