Snow developed across portions of the central North Carolina mountains during the afternoon of the 28th as a cold front swept through the area. Snow showers persisted through the early morning hours in the wake of the front near the Tennessee border as northwest winds pushed moisture up the western slopes of the Appalachians. By the time the snow tapered off around sunrise on the 29th, accumulations ranged from 1 to 2 inches in the valleys, to as much as 7 inches above 4000 feet or so.
