At the Bluff Creek RAWS site (BLUM8), temperatures in the 30s below zero and breezy winds created a brief period of wind chills of -40 or worse on the morning of January 1st. The peak wind chill of -40 was recorded between 6:44 AM and 7:44 AM.

Wider weather episode

The week-long arctic cold spell from the end of December 2021 spilled over into the first day of 2022, with continued well below zero temperatures and pockets of light winds, which created dangerously cold wind chill values for many northeast Montana locations.
