Heavy Snow — Southeast Carter, Tennessee

2022-03-12 · Southeast Carter, Tennessee

Event narrative

At Roan Mountain, 5.5 inches of snow was reported.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system tracking across the southeastern states brought an anomalously late season heavy snowfall event to the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachian region. This was the most significant widespread March winter event in the region since the '93 Storm of the Century. This event also produced the most single-day snowfall at the Knoxville climate site (6.5) since the 1993 storm. The combination of high snowfall rates and strong winds led to scattered power outages, in addition to difficult travel.
