Event narrative

Rain changes to a heavy, wet pasty snow during the early morning hours and quickly accumulated, especially the higher elevations. Snowfall accumulations of 6 to 15+ inches occurred and resulted in downed tree limbs, branches and trees that caused significant power outages.

Wider weather episode

A double barreled storm system with copious amounts of moisture and marginal freezing temperatures moved across New England and New York on April 19th during the early to mid-morning hours. In the higher elevations of northern NY, especially the Adirondacks, a heavy wet snow caked everything and accumulated 6 to 12 inches and locally higher, resulting in numerous tree limb/branch and some tree damage and numerous power outages. Also, the intensity of the precipitation allowed cold air to lower to the surface in the Champlain Valley and this accounted for 4 to 8 inches of snow accumulation and similar impacts. An estimated 25,000 customers lost power in NY's four northern counties and more than 200,000 customers statewide.
