An intense low pressure system moved slowly across the Northern Plains, producing a prolonged period of strong northwesterly winds across the area. The strongest winds developed during the early morning of the 6th and continued into the daytime hours of the 7th. Sustained winds of 30 to 50 mph and gusts of 60 to 80 mph were recorded at times, especially across the northwestern and west central South Dakota plains. Several tractor-trailers were blown over on Interstate 90 east of Rapid City.
