Event narrative
Department of Highways reported a tree down along I-20 near the Lee-Darlington County border. Also reported dime size hail and cars at a standstill due to heavy rain.
Wider weather episode
Widespread pulse severe thunderstorms formed within a weak area of convergence across central South Carolina as the area remained positioned between an approaching shortwave and offshore ridge. Elevated instability, an inverted V sounding at low levels, and dry air aloft yielded an enhanced downburst and hail risk. Pulse convection produced severe winds and numerous hail reports across the area including a downburst in West Columbia.
