Event narrative
A late-May cold front brought a strong line of showers and thunderstorms along with it. The National Data Buoy Center Buoy 42020 recorded gusts above 34 knots starting at 5:30AM CDT and remained above 34 knots through 7:00AM CDT. The strongest gust recorded was 51 knots at 6:00AM CDT.
Wider weather episode
A longwave trough over the center of the country pushed a weak cold front through the Lower Texas Coastal Waters the morning of May 25th. As the cold front pushed south, it strengthened due to more available energy over the region. This lead to several Marine Thunderstorm Wind gusts in excess of 34 knots or 39 mph. The strongest Marine Thunderstorm Wind was 61 knots, or 70 mph, at the SPI Brazos Santiago Station.
