Event narrative
Snow squall. Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph and heavy snowfall led to visibilities around 1/2 mile or less in areas along the Gunflint Trail and along US Highway 61 along the northern Lake Superior shore. Webcams showed visibility as low as 1/4 mile or less at times during the heaviest squalls.
Wider weather episode
Low pressure passing to the north of northeastern Minnesota created conditions favorable for snow squalls. Gusty northwest winds and convective snow showers developed during the afternoon hours and affected portions of the Arrowhead of Minnesota, primarily in Cook and Lake counties. Visibility from webcams in the area was less than 1/4 mile at times in the heaviest snow squalls. Satellite and radar imagery revealed the convective nature of the snow showers and increased confidence that the squalls would persist for several hours.
