Event narrative

A White Sands Missile Range mesonet station south of Bingham measured a 66 mph wind gust likely associated with thunderstorm outflow.

Wider weather episode

A backdoor cold front that moved through eastern and central New Mexico on June 1, 2022, ushered in low-level moisture and helped to set the stage for thunderstorm development during the afternoon of June 2nd. As the atmophere destabilized, thunderstorms developed along the high terrain as well as along the dryline. The highest severe weather threat for the day was across south central New Mexico where the nose of an upper-level jet provided the best wind shear. Hail and severe winds were the primary threats of the day, and a thunderstorm near Gran Quivira was reported to have quarter size hail. In southern Socorro County, wind gusts in excess of 60 mph were reported along thunderstorm outflow.
