Easterly winds with gusts as high as 49 mph developed in Point Lay the morning of April 15th. Blowing snow associated with the strong winds caused the visibility to drop down to less than one quarter mile for several hours.
Wider weather episode
A strong are of high pressure over the Beaufort Sea combined with a deep area of low pressure over the Bering Strait resulted in strong easterly winds developing along the Arctic Coast. The strong winds brought blizzard conditions along the coast.
