Event narrative

The zone started May with Severe(D2) drought over the west and Extreme(D3) drought east, but by the end of the month, the Severe(D2) drought was only over the far west while Exceptional(D4) drought moved into the eastern half. No precipitation fell at Buckhorn which was 0.36 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

No precipitation fell for the second straight month over southern New Mexico. By the end of May, Exceptional(D4) drought conditions covered a large portion of the area.
