May started out with the western half of the zone in Extreme(D3) drought with Severe(D2) drought over the east. By the end of the month, the west was in Exceptional(D4) drought and the east was in Extreme(D3) drought.

Wider weather episode

No precipitation fell for the second straight month over southern New Mexico. By the end of May, Exceptional(D4) drought conditions covered a large portion of the area.
