The public reported one inch hail.

Low pressure occluded over the Lower Great Lakes on May 4 with a trailing cold front slowly moving across central Virginia and North Carolina. Ahead of the cold front, an in-situ wedge was in place across central Virginia in the morning which began eroding during the afternoon. A surface low developed along the intersections between the fronts in the late afternoon and evening. Storms developed ahead of the cold front across central, eastern, and southern Virginia and northeast North Carolina during the afternoon and evening hours.
