Event narrative
A line of severe thunderstorms roared south from Ontario and Michigan across Lake Erie at 50 mph. The strong winds rushed out ahead of the thunderstorms and despite the issuance of a special marine warning many boaters were caught by surprise. The Coast Guard received 152 calls for assistance and had to fish many people out of the lake as dozens of boats capsized or were destroyed on the rocks. One fatality occurred when a 28-year-old man capsized off Lorain and suffered broken bones and other injuries. He was hospitalized but died several days later. One couple spent almost eight hours in the water after their boat capsized near Kelleys Island. They were spotted about 0200 by Coast Guard search helicopter and had to be treated for hypothermia. The other injuries were hypothermia or cuts and bruises. M28BO
