What F4 means. This tornado was rated on Fujita’s original scale, used until 2007. F4 meant devastating damage: well-built houses levelled; the scale paired it with winds of 207–260 mph, figures later judged too high, especially toward the top of the scale, and revised downward in the Enhanced Fujita scale. Ratings then, as now, came from the damage.

What the National Weather Service wrote

The Lancaster tornado was on the ground for approximately 6 miles and was 1/2 mile wide, producing upper F3 to lower F4 damage. Two hundred twenty-three homes were destroyed, 227 damaged, 58 businesses destroyed. Severe damage was done to one elementary and one junior high school. Eighty percent of the historic downtown square was destroyed. (F73O)(F70O)(M71O)
