What F2 means. This tornado was rated on Fujita’s original scale, used until 2007. F2 meant considerable damage: roofs torn off well-built houses, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted; the scale paired it with winds of 113–157 mph, figures later judged too high, especially toward the top of the scale, and revised downward in the Enhanced Fujita scale. Ratings then, as now, came from the damage.

What the National Weather Service wrote

The tornado was first spotted by public and later confirmed by the sheriff and a spotter. It caused only minor damage. It was the larger of the two tornadoes that formed that evening. Residents near the tornado reported hail the size of a quarter before the tornado arrived, then hearing a "freight train" type of sound as it touched down. It damaged boats and trailers in the Lake Amistad area, then passed across rural subdivisions, damaging several mobile homes and houses and injuring nearly two dozen people. Two people in a pop-up trailer were injured shortly afterward as a strong thunderstorm gust blew the trailer into a tree. A second tornado was spotted shortly afterward behind the mall. The two tornadoes knocked down about a dozen power poles.
