Event narrative

The second severe thunderstorm of the afternoon ripped through The Plains, where the Virginia Winefest was being held. Thunderstorm winds, estimated at over 60 mph, blew down dozens of tents and temporary buildings. Flying debris from the structures caused 15 injuries to festival-goers; most injuries were minor head trauma and lacerations. Twelve persons were treated at the scene; three others were sent to a local hospital. In nearby Marshall, trees and power lines were knocked down, causing an isolated flash fire.
