Event narrative
A series of severe thunderstorms rolled across northern Wisconsin for several hours. They generated powerful winds which toppled large trees and power lines in Land O'Lakes, Sayner, Conover, and Eagle River (Vilas County); in Cumberland and Turtle Lake (Barron County); in Balsam Lake (Polk County); in Rhinelander (Oneida County); in Antigo and Pearson (Langlade County), near Merril (Lincoln County), in Goodman and Athelstane (Marinette County); in Edgar (Marathon County), in Tony (Rusk County); in and in Mountain, Oconto, and Oconto Falls (Oconto County). A tornado touched down 1.5 miles southwest of Phelps (Vilas County) at 1640CST, and then moved east, uprooting trees and power poles. Trees fell on cars, homes and businesses in this rural area. It lifted two miles southeast of Phelps at 1647CST. Strong thunderstorm winds temporarily lifted the roof off a hangar building at the Cumberland Airport. Three walls of the hangar buckled as the roof settled back down. As a result the entire structure collapsed onto three airplanes stored in the hangar. Strong thunderstorm winds struck the Chippewa Valley Rock Fest near Cadot (Chippewa County). Flying debris injured 10 people. The strong winds knocked over a beer tent and several large speaker towers.
