Intense severe thunderstorms moved from South Dakota into Dickey County near Ellendale during the early morning hours of June 14, producing widespread wind damage along with some hail damage over portions of the southern James River Valley.
The strongest winds, estimated at 110 mph, occurred over the Ellendale area in Dickey County, where many hardwood trees were snapped and others were uprooted, some falling onto homes. Many power poles were snapped with lines torn, and homes were damaged. The strong winds continued to the north and east, with extensive tree damage occurring in LaMoure County at Dickey and Adrian, into Stutsman County near Montpelier. In addition to the damaging winds, large hail also occurred, with the largest reported hail of three inches in diameter falling over Forbes, Dickey County, causing damage to vehicles and homes.
