2022-06-20 · near Ellendale Arpt, Dickey, North Dakota
Wider weather episode
Two areas of thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and early evening hours. The first area was over south central North Dakota into the James River Valley along a slow moving frontal boundary. The second area was over southwest North Dakota ahead of a progressing surface trough. The largest reported hailstone was two inches in diameter, and fell in Dickey County. The strongest reported winds were estimated at 70 mph, which caused tree damage in LaMoure County. In addition, over the Dickinson area copious amounts of small hail fell, along with heavy rain. Although the largest hailstones were the size of a nickel, the hail piled up closing some streets and stranding some cars. The hail also combined with gusty winds to create hail drifts, some a few feet high.
