Daytime highs ranged between 102 and 106 degrees each day between August 16 and August 20.

Wider weather episode

A large area of high pressure which prevailed over the area between August 16 and August 20 provided for much warmer than normal temperatures across the area with dangerous heat prevailing during the daytime across the San Joaquin Valley, West Side Hills, lower Sierra foothills and the Kern River Valley. An upper trough pushed into the Pacific Northwest on August 21 which weakened the large high pressure center and brought a cooling trend to the area.
