A deepening surface low over the Northern Plains was advecting strong warm air into the Northland throughout the day. Despite a strong cap in place, elevated storms developed over northern Minnesota during the afternoon hours. The highly unstable environment quickly saw the storms grow upscale and eventually produced damaging winds and penny sized hail.
