The Lake Ontario lake breeze sagged southward early in the evening and intersected an enhanced cumulus field residing over eastern Erie, eastern Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, and Livingston counties. At the same time, a subtle short wave trough aloft crossed over the aforementioned area. Capping had kept robust instability at bay through the afternoon until the combination of these features was finally able to allow convective initiation. The storms then busted through the cap and aided by 35-40 knots of shear, the storms grew rapidly and managed to maintain intensity.
