Event narrative

Numerous trees were downed by thunderstorm winds through the City of Martinsville. Several fell onto power lines, and a few roads were made impassable by larger downed trees.

Wider weather episode

A persistent hot and moist air mass allowed for high levels of instability in southwest Virginia. A cold front moving southeast through the region interacted with this unstable air mass and formed numerous severe thunderstorms which produced damaging winds.
