Numerous trees were downed by thunderstorm winds throughout the county, with several making roads impassable.
The wider storm
A persistent hot and moist air mass allowed for high levels of instability in southwest Virginia. A cold front moving southeast through the region interacted with this unstable air mass and formed numerous severe thunderstorms which produced damaging winds.
