Severe thunderstorms moved from northeast Montana into northwest North Dakota ahead of an upper level low, spreading into north central North Dakota as a low-level jet increased in intensity. During the initial storms, damaging winds were the main threat. The strongest winds were estimated at 95 mph over the Wildrose area in Williams County where outbuildings were damaged, sheet metal detached from buildings damaged vehicles, and trees were uprooted and snapped. Later, storms had a mix of hail and damaging wind gusts. The largest hail reported was three inches in diameter, causing damage in the Williston area of Williams County.
