An upper level short wave trough moving through the region resulted in severe thunderstorms developing over south central North Dakota. Initially, a severe thunderstorm quickly developed and moved through the Bismarck and Lincoln areas of Burleigh County, with a second storm developing right behind the first one following a similar track. There was a report of tennis ball size hail in the north side of Bismarck, with most locations seeing quarter to golf ball size hail. The area around the Bismarck Airport received no hail. Where hail fell there was widespread roof and vehicle damage. Additional severe storms developed to the south and east, resulting in many reports of crop damage. Although hail was the main threat with these storms, one storm produced reported 65 mph wind gusts near Zeeland in McIntosh County.
