Event narrative

On Friday, July 22nd, a 13-year-old girl was swept downstream while swimming in the James River near Frankfort. The search was postponed around 11:30 p.m. Friday due to the dangers of the current and the inability to see in the dark. The girl's body was found around 9:25 a.m. on Saturday.

Wider weather episode

Due to above-normal rainfall, the James River continued to flood from June into and through July near Columbia, Stratford, and Ashton. Significant amounts of agricultural land was flooded along with a few area roads, as river gauges reached moderate to major flood categories.
