Event narrative

The Madras airport ASOS measured a wind gust of 67mph at 5:55pm. An NWS employee 1 mile southwest of Madras, OR also witnessed thunderstorm outflow winds that blew down fences, produced low visibilities in blowing dust, and also produced a gustnado in nearby farm fields.

Wider weather episode

A slowly advancing low pressure system off the coast and a ridging over the intermountain west allowed moisture in the mid-levels to advect into the central OR area. Increasing instability from hot temperatures allowed for a strong thunderstorm to develop near the the Madras, OR area in the afternoon.
