To start September, all but the far southwestern corner of Northern Valley County worsened to (D2-Severe) conditions, while the far southwestern corner remained in (D1-Moderate) drought. On the second week of September, all of Northern Valley County had worsened to (D2-Severe) conditions. By the last week of September the southeastern three quarters of Northern Valley County had worsened to (D3-Extreme) drought while the northwestern quarter of the county remained in (D2-Severe) conditions.

A dry August allowed drought to return to portions of northeastern Montana.
