The Matt Staff Road Fire was a fire that started on a Red Flag Warning Day approximately 5 miles east of East Helena, MT. The fire quickly spread east, given strong westerly winds the day the fire started, and ultimately burned to about 12 miles east of East Helena. The fire started near Spokane Creek Road, just off U.S. Highway 12 near state Highway 284. It originally burned grassland, then crested the ridge between East Helena and Canyon Ferry Reservoir and began to burn brush. Cause of the fire has officially been listed as Unknown.
