What the National Weather Service wrote

Severe (D2) drought conditions persisted over far northern Wheeler county through August. Over the remainder of Wheeler county, moderate (D1) drought conditions deteriorated to severe (D2) drought conditions by the end of August. The cooperative observer at Bartlett 1W reported 0.98 inches of precipitation in August. This was 2.41 inches below the normal of 3.39 inches.

The wider storm

Drought severity worsened across most of western and north central Nebraska in August. Severe (D2) drought conditions expanded to all of the central and eastern Sandhills by the end of the month. By the end of August, exceptional (D4) drought had developed over the large portion of southwestern Nebraska.
