Event narrative

Severe (D2) drought conditions persisted over eastern Cherry county through the end of August. The cooperative observer at Valentine Lakes National Wildlife Refuge reported 2.15 inches of precipitation in August. This was 0.48 inches below the normal of 2.63 inches. At Valentine, 1.78 inches of precipitation fell in August. This was 0.26 inches below the normal of 2.04 inches. The cooperative observer at Kilgore 1NE reported 1.36 inches of precipitation for August.

Wider weather episode

Drought severity worsened across most of western and north central Nebraska in August. Severe (D2) drought conditions expanded to all of the central and eastern Sandhills by the end of the month. By the end of August, exceptional (D4) drought had developed over the large portion of southwestern Nebraska.
