Event narrative

Severe (D2) drought conditions spread into the southern third of Arthur county by the end of August. Moderate (D1) drought conditions were present over the remainder of the county. The cooperative observer at Arthur reported 0.69 inches of rainfall in August. This was 1.61 inches below the normal of 2.30 inches.

Wider weather episode

Drought severity worsened across most of western and north central Nebraska in August. Severe (D2) drought conditions expanded to all of the central and eastern Sandhills by the end of the month. By the end of August, exceptional (D4) drought had developed over the large portion of southwestern Nebraska.
