Event narrative
Severe (D2) drought conditions persisted across northwestern Deuel county in August. Across the remainder of the county, extreme (D3) drought conditions, transitioned to exceptional (D4) drought conditions by the end of August. The cooperative observer at Chappell reported 0.43 inches of precipitation in August.
Wider weather episode
Drought severity worsened across most of western and north central Nebraska in August. Severe (D2) drought conditions expanded to all of the central and eastern Sandhills by the end of the month. By the end of August, exceptional (D4) drought had developed over the large portion of southwestern Nebraska.
