Event narrative

Strongest winds gusting to Hurricane force were observed at the Shemya/Eareckson Airforce Station ASOS during the morning of September 30th. Wider weather episode

Typhoon Kulap moved across northwest portions of the northern Pacific near the end of September 2022, transitioning to an extratropical low as it approached the southwestern Bering Sea. The system was able to favorably interact and merge with a separate upper level trough over the western Bering to promote further strengthening after going extratropical, and peak sustained winds of Hurricane force were observed near the center between September 29th and 30th over the western Bering and far western Aleutians as the system reached peak intensity.
